DC to DC Voltage Conversion and Voltage Converters
|
DC Voltage Converters change one type of DC (battery power) into another type of DC. Typically this means something like changing 24 Volts into 12 Volts. This should not be confused with Step Down voltage converters these are for using equipment from the USA in the UK or Ireland. They have a 3 pin UK power plug and a US socket. Also there are Step Up voltage converters which are for using equipment from the UK or Ireland in the USA. They have a 2 or 3 pin US power plug and a 3 pin UK socket. Related items are electrical plug adapters. These simply convert one type of AC plug into another (eg UK to Euro). Something else that converts voltage (although in a different way) are Switch Mode Power Supplies and in-car power supplies. You can find these here: Power Supplies for Laptop Computers and Other Equipment - AC/DC Converters. Another similar device is a Power Inverter. This takes the input from a 12 Volt or 24 Volt battery (car, truck, boat etc.) and turns it into 240 Volt AC. the point of this is to allow you to power a mains device using a vehicle battery. You can find these here: Power Inverters. Yet another device is a Voltage Regulator. This connects to the mains and outputs a regulated DC intput (usually switchable). |

AFX In-car Switch Mode Adapter
The AFX in-car DC to DC Switch Mode Adapter is designed to allow you to power a range of DC equipment from a 12V car cigarette light plug. There are a lot of these kind of products that step the voltage down from 12V to something lower, but this AFX model actually steps the voltage up. This means you can power items that operate between 15V and 24V. To adjust the voltage you just insert the correct jumper into the voltage selection socket before connecting. There is a selection of eight different DC plugs covering all the common attachments. This unit can be used for powering some laptop computers, games consoles, PDAs etc. The Amps it can handle depend upon the voltage and range between 4.5A and 3A. Maximum power is 70 Watts. A chart listing current and voltage is below.
