Whatever you do - remove the power plug from the wall socket before doing anything, just turning the PC off is not enough!

Try and make sure you know what you are doing before you do anything. Most jobs on PCs are not that hard once you've figured out what goes where. If you are in doubt buy a book about it first or do a search on the Internet.
