What's This Then? The Humax PVR 9200T is a Freeview Playback set-top box allowing you to receive all the free to air digital channels. There is no subscription payment - you just buy the Humax PVR 9200T and that's it! The PVR 9200T is ideal for digital terrestrial broadcast reception - but there's more. Humax have added a hard disk drive, this make the machine to a combination PVR. What's A PVR? OK, so the Humax PVR 9200T is a Freeview set top box, but it's also a PVR. PVR stands for Personal Video recorder. Inside the casing there is a little computer with a 160 Gigabyte hard drive. This allows you to record and store up to 100 hours of TV and because the reception is digital you can be sure of only the best quality pictures and sound from your recording. If you ever do begin to fill up your hard drive you can easily archive recordings onto other media. The Humax PVR 9200T will connect to any DVD Recorder or VCR and you can copy the recordings across. PVR Features? The Humax PVR is not like an ordinary video recorder though. Apart from the fact that it doesn't need any tapes, the Humax PVR 9200T has what Humax call trick play functions. This means lots of things but for example: You can be watching a program and someone phones you up - the Humax allows you to record the program you were watching so that you can go back to the place where you were before you were interrupted - even if the program hasn't finished yet you can still watch it all in sequence. In effect this allows you to pause live TV. It's a bit like TV time travel. You can go direct to a particular recording or a particular place in that recording. You can fast forward and rewind at various speeds. You can set the machine to record what you are watching and then create a kind of instant replay for yourself with the touch of one button. Apart from all this all the usual VCR functions such as timer record are there, as well as the ability to record a program at the same time every day or week etc. Unlike a lot of other PVRs the Humax PVR 9200T has a Twin Tuner. This Twin Tuner allows you to record from one digital channel while watching another digital channel. Alternatively you can use it to display Picture in Picture which is displaying two digital channels on the screen at the same time. Digital Receiver Features? The number of free channels is always increasing so it's nice to know that the Humax PVR 9200T can manage up to 200 channels. There are regular software upgrades allowing you more features in the future. You can display the channel list any way you like, by name, number favourites etc. You can have 5 Favorite channel groups (maximum of 100 channels in each group), so every family member can have their own favorite channels grouped together. For anyone hard of hearing the subtitle support on the Humax PVR 9200T is particularly good as it supports both EBU and DVB subtitles. The Humax PVR 9200T has a Top Up TV slot. This will take a Top Up TV card that you can buy and allows access to many pay TV channels. Connectivity? You
get RF (aerial) In and Out ports. This means that it can be connected to a non-Scart
TV. There is no fixed Scart connection. Instead the Humax PVR 9200T has two Scart
outputs, one goes to the TV and the other can go to anything you like (surround
sound system or even a VCR if you want your programs on tape. The Scart sockets
mean that you have to use your own Scart cables, but it also means that the positioning
of the PVR 9200T is only limited by the length of the cable you choose to use.
You can connect the Humax PVR 9200T to a surround sound amplifier for 5.1 Dolby
Digital Surround Sound, the Humax 9200T has a S/PDIF digital audio output. The
Humax PVR 9200T also has a pair of stereo phono outputs (for your amp) and a video
phono out too. It also has a RS232C data port with a transfer rate of 115 kbps.
Finally for connection to a PC (for software upgrades etc.) there is a USB 2.0
socket in the front of the Humax PVR 9200T. This USB 2.0 connection can also be
used with a feature called Duovisio. This allows you to listen to MP3 music downloaded
to the PVR 9200T from your PC or to display images downloaded in the same way. Anything Really Good? Built in RF Modulator. If you need one of these a separate one would cost you at least £39.50. The RF modulator works like a VCR RF modulator - so it passes on the RF analogue channels it receives. Installing It? Installing the Humax PVR 9200T is very easy. There
is a menu system and all you do is follow the instructions. You get a video preview
window, which makes things even easier. You can sort the channels into whatever
order you want (alphabetical, in number order or favorites). Anything Else? The Humax PVR9200T has a software upgrade service. The Humax PVR9200T has a very useful child lock. The Video format is adjustable to 4:3, 16:9 and letterbox. Not sure what this means? Go to our TV Jargon Buster page. |
