| What's It For?
The Newlink Wireless PCMCIA Adapter Card is a Wireless Network PCMCIA card for a notebook PC. In conjunction with other PCMCIA and PCI cards and other equipment such as wireless print servers, wireless PCI adapters, routers etc. - it can allow you to wirelessly network your home or office. It can also allow you to wirelessly connect to a more common wired Local Area Network or to the Internet through a network (with the right equipment). How Does It Work? The Newlink Wireless PCMCIA Adapter Card uses and complies with the 2.4 GHz frequency band IEEE 802.11g draft and 802.11b 11Mbps standards. What this means is that it uses a broad band FM signal similar to that used by Video Senders. This gives it a range of about 100m in clear line of sight or about 30m inside a building. The Newlink Wireless PCMCIA Adapter Card dynamically shifts connection speed depending upon signal strength. This means that the wireless PCMCIA card is always checking its connection and changing its data speed to best suit that connection. So a strong connection will have the wireless PCMCIA card working faster. The Newlink Wireless PCMCIA Adapter Card can connect at any speed from 1 - 54Mbps. Connecting? Connections using the Newlink Wireless PCMCIA Adapter Card are simple to manage. The Wireless PCMCIA card has two main modes - Ad Hoc mode allows you to connect PCs together to make a wireless peer to peer network. Ideal for linking two machines for file and print sharing, games playing, Internet connection sharing and so on. In Infrastructure Mode you can connect to an ethernet (wired) Local Area Network (LAN) using Wireless Access Point or a wireless router. Why Would I Want This? It's all about flexibility really. A wireless network allows you to add and subtract PCs and peripherals quickly and easily. This particular wireless PCMCIA card can handle data at very fast rates - up to 54Mbps - fast enough for streaming audio and video. A wireless network is great at home for games playing, it is easy to set up with no cable laying or hole drilling needed. A wireless office is more fluid work stations can be moved without messing up connections, wireless PCMCIA equipped notebook computers can be added and subtracted from the wireless network simply by moving them into range and switching them on. The Newlink Wireless PCMCIA Adapter Card has the capacity to store multiple Wireless Network Profiles. This makes it perfect for any person who has to work in multiple locations and who may need to transfer data to and from more than one network. Security? You might expect security issues with wireless networking. The whole point of a easy to use flexible wireless network is lost if it is not secure. Newlink have built in a 64/128/256-Bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) with ASCII, HEX, or Passphrase Key - this ensures that as long as you keep the passwords secret your wireless network stays secure. |
