How Does It Work? To begin with it only works with computers that have USB ports, if you computer is less that 4 years old it almost certainly does have a USB port. The Philex Universal Reader comes with its own installation CD - once the software is installed all you do is plug in your card reader and drag and drop the files between your cards and your computer. Very simple. Take the SmartMedia, Microdrive, Memory Stick, Compact Flash, Multimedia or Secure Digital card from the camera. MP3 player, PDA etc., insert it into the Philex Universal Reader and copy your favorite files to or from your computer in seconds. Data transfer speeds are 20 to 50 times faster than serial port connectivity - great for large and numerous images. Since the camera/music player/PDA does not have to connect to the PC for downloads, it saves battery power. Who Needs This? Anyone who uses more than one or two types of memory card. Great for large offices where people need to share files across a number of card formats. Why Is It So Cheap This is a USB 1.1 card reader and writer. The new standard is USB 2.0 which is faster, but which will only work at the faster rate on computers that have USB 2.0 ports. For older computers (a year or more old) the USB 2.0 readers are no faster than this Philex one. |
