An attenuator will reduce the strength of a signal. It is possible to have a signal that is too strong, in such cases an attenuator will bring the signal strength down to optimum level.

There are fixed attenuators and variable ones. An attenuator's strength is measured in dB. the more dB the more the attenuator will reduce the signal strength.
