UPS
An uninterruptible power supply (UPS), connects to equipment (usually computer equipment) that is sensitive to sudden power loss. The UPS will maintain a continuous supply of electric power to any equipment it is connected to by supplying power from a separate source if mains electric power fails for any reason. The UPS will effectively switch from mains electricity to its own battery power almost instantaneously. UPS is used for computer, medical and telecommunications equipment, where power loss could lead to loss of data or worse. The UPS will provide a bridge allowing an orderly power down - so data is not lost. Typically the UPS only provides power for a few minutes - enough time to save work and power down the equipment.
